What is the difference between a psychiatrist and a psychologist?

A psychiatrist is a qualified medical doctor who specialises in the diagnosis, treatment, and prevention of mental illnesses.

They are qualified to prescribe medication and provide a range of medical treatments for complex mental health conditions such as schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, severe depression, and certain anxiety disorders.

Psychiatrists offer a range of treatments that may involve medication management, psychotherapy or other psychological therapies, and brain stimulation therapies.

A psychologist is a highly trained professional that specialises in the assessment, diagnosis and treatment of mental health concerns as well as a range of other issues such as relationship difficulties, .

Although a psychologist may have attained a doctoral qualification (PhD) which means they may use the title of Dr, this differs from a doctor of medicine (MD).

Do I need a referral to see one of your specialists?

Will my private health insurance cover my mental health treatment?

Depending on your health insurer, you may be eligible for a rebate of all or part of your fees under your extras cover. Please contact your private health insurance provider for details of what is covered.

What happens in a psychiatry session?

Your first visit involves an in-depth assessment where one of our psychiatrists will gather information about your mental health history, current concerns, and goals for treatment. This session allows us to tailor a personalized treatment plan to best support your needs.

Your session will usually last for around 60 minutes. Please arrive 10 minutes before your scheduled appointment time to complete relevant paperwork.

What do I need to bring to my appointment?

Please bring your referral letter, Medicare card and details of your Private Health Insurance fund if relevant.

Please also bring along any medications that you are currently taking in their original pharmacy packaging, as this will allow our psychiatrists to take a full and accurate medical history and develop a comprehensive treatment plan.

How often do I need to see my psychiatrist or psychologist?

Your clinician will work with you to develop an appropriate treatment plan, including the number and frequency of sessions.

At the commencement of treatment with one of our psychiatrists, you may have appointments more frequently in order to monitor the effectiveness of any prescribed treatments.

For longer term therapy, it is common for appointments to be scheduled less frequently, i.e. every 1-2 months. This will be discussed and agreed upon in consultation with your treating practitioner.

How do I cancel my appointment?

Please contact reception to cancel your appointment. We request that you please provide a minimum of 24 hours notice for any cancellations to allow us to offer your appointment to another patient on our waitlist.

Any appointments cancelled within 24 hours of your scheduled appointment time will incur full fees, which cannot be claimed back through Medicare.
